Beam's Pin Bottle 8 Year Review
Beam's Pin Bottle 8 Year Review
A limited edition release commemorating Jim Beam's 230th anniversary. The Bowling Pin shaped bottle is a throwback nod to one of the most popular of a wide range of decanters that Beam released from the 1950s through 1990s. From what we originally read, it would be a distillery only release, but we were able to grab ours from the Jim Beam tent at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival.
Nose
Strawberries and Cream, Peanut Shells, Oak, Buttery Sugar Cookie, Green Apple. Caramel filled Cadbury Egg after some time in the glass
Palate
Tingly spice that rounds off as it sits on the palate, thinly creamy, charred oak, faint barrel spice, dry hay, fairly straightforward
Finish
Medium length, oak carries through, holds on with the feeling of eating a green apple peel
Complexity
It's not steeped in layers of flavor, but it's not a one-note wonder either. For a low proof bourbon, it still carriers a decent amount of character. I like to refer to highly complex whiskies as good thinking pours, where this would fall into the easy sipping lane.
Uniqueness
It's a fun bottle design as a throwback to the iconic Beam decanters from years back. The whiskey inside of the bottle is more of an everyday drinker with plenty of peers across shelves though.
Value
At $99, it delivers a drinking experience that I would probably expect from something half the price. As a nod to the past with the bottle design, it carries some novelty, but from a flavor perspective, value isn't the reason to pick one up.
Final Impression
It's a solid everyday Bourbon in a novelty bottle that is sure to spark conversation when someone sees it on the shelf. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a pour, but also don't know if I would recommend hunting one down just for the contents. If you are a diehard Beam fan, the presentation would stand out in a collection though.
